Bale to Rome
An
eventful journey that witnessed the fugitive party undertake a memorable
night-time sailing along a tranquil Alpine lake. St.Patrick’s Day, 1608, was
to be unforgettable as well, but for less pleasurable reasons. Crossing the
Alps, a pack-horse containing a substantial amount of money plunged into a deep
ravine at a place called the ‘Devil’s Bridge’. Almost destitute, the
exiles arrived in the grand city of Milan where they were sumptuously
entertained. Visiting the chapel beneath the main altar of the spectacular Duomo
cathedral was a particular treat. Finally completing their mammoth journey, the
earls’ were afforded a triumphant horse-drawn carriage entrance into Rome, on
the orders of the Pope.
